Another notable text removed from Tucson’s classrooms is Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest.” In a meeting this week, administrators informed Mexican-American studies teachers to stay away from any units where “race, ethnicity and oppression are central themes,” including the teaching of Shakespeare’s classic in Mexican-American literature courses.

It’s an American conceit that we are smarter than those little brown people in Mexico (or anywhere else for that matter). But they just aren’t dumb enough to take two states full of white bigots who can’t even survive a full day of work in the fields.

I live in the little known state between these two monuments to the Antebellum South. I drove through a poor little town and my wife said, “Yeah, you’re right. The poorer the town the more churches there are.” It was odd that she brought that up, as I’d made that observation some years ago. But she mentioned that just as I was wondering why there were so many gun shops in the same little town. If I were a sociologist, I bet the relationship would make for an interesting study.

Gun Corollary: “Them damn Mexican bean eating illegals gonna cross the border and murder me in my bed for my socks, so I’m gone sleep with my shotgun.”
It’s all about socks. Or sockiology, if you will.
