C Street Fellowship Of Christians Supports Rape Of Children

Jeff Sharlet writes in his new book, “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power”, about the secretive group that helped cover up Senator John Ensign’s extramarital affair.

A stunning excerpt:

Family leaders consider their political network to be Christ’s avant garde, an elite that transcends not just conventional morality but also earthly laws regulating lobbying. In the Family’s early days, they debated registering as “a lobby for God’s Kingdom.” Instead, founder Abraham Vereide decided that the group could be more effective by working personally with politicians. “The more invisible you can make your organization,” Vereide’s successor, current leader Doug Coe preaches, “the more influence you can have.” That’s true — which is why we have laws requiring lobbyists to identify themselves as such.

But David Coe, Doug Coe’s son and heir apparent, calls himself simply a friend to men such as John Ensign, whom he guided through the coverup of his affair. I met the younger Coe when I lived for several weeks as a member of the Family. He’s a surprising source of counsel, spiritual or otherwise. Attempting to explain what it means to be chosen for leadership like King David was — or Mark Sanford, according to his own estimate — he asked a young man who’d put himself, body and soul, under the Family’s authority, “Let’s say I hear you raped three little girls. What would I think of you?” The man guessed that Coe would probably think that he was a monster. “No,” answered Coe, “I wouldn’t.” Why? Because, as a member of the Family, he’s among what Family leaders refer to as the “new chosen.” If you’re chosen, the normal rules don’t apply.

These are the men that Republican families trust to lead the country out of the moral wilderness those families believe we are in.

Now we have a good idea why the country has been going to hell, with Republicans leading the way. What the hell, if it’s okay by the Republicans to rape children, then it’s okay to invade countries illegally and slaughter foreigners; it’s okay to act like whores for corporations; it’s okay to deny health care to Americans; it’s okay to lie and cheat and deceive to get the government to follow your personal agenda of immoral war and torture and unending imprisonment without charges.

Where will these people take us? Once again, The Lion suggests the answer lies in the words of Jacob Bronowski, particularly when he speaks of arrogance.

Jacob Bronowski,in The Ascent of Man, at the pond in Auschwitz prison camp, squeezing the mud between his fingers…

“It is said that science will dehumanise people and turn them into numbers. That is false, tragically false. Look for yourself. This is the concentration camp and crematorium at Auschwitz. This is where people were turned into numbers. Into this pond were flushed the ashes of some four million people. And that was not done by gas. It was done by arrogance. It was done by dogma. It was done by ignorance. When people believe that they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they behave. This is what men do when they aspire to the knowledge of gods.

“Science is a very human form of knowledge. We are always at the brink of the known, we always feel forward for what is to be hoped. Every judgment in science stands on the edge of error, and is personal. Science is a tribute to what we can know although we are fallible. In the end the words were said by Oliver Cromwell: ‘I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken’.

“I owe it as a scientist to my friend Leo Szilard, I owe it as a human being to the many members of my family who died at Auschwitz, to stand here by the pond as a survivor and a witness. We have to cure ourselves of the itch for absolute knowledge and power. We have to close the distance between the push-button order and the human act. We have to touch people.”

  1. That’s pretty deep for this hour of the morning. I feel so ignorant now… Thanks for enlightening me just a bit.

    • I actually don’t have anything amusing to reply on this one. ‘Deep’ doesn’t begin to describe the sewage these people want to inflict on the rest of us.

  2. This, unfortunately, does not surprise me one bit. It sickens me, but does not surprise me. Once a person is convinced that they are, personally, carrying out god(s) will, the normal rules do not apply. Ends justify the means — if god(s) tells you to kill, you kill. And, since you are carrying out god(s) will, you can do no wrong. As they say, the rules no longer apply.

And this is, to a ‘T’, the people who are running the GOP. And have been since the early 70s.

    • So according to these guys if god tells me to steal your scotch and your daughter, everything’s cool, right? Hmm, maybe in keeping with their tradition I’ll offer you five cows for the daughter and six goats for the scotch.

  3. I’ve got that book. I’m wondering if reading it will make me suicidal. 😦

    • I just bought it. Haven’t started it yet, but at least having it in the house hasn’t turned me against myself yet. Besides, I refuse to commit suicide before the last of my cats goes and before I get laid at least one more time (that should guarantee me a long life in itself). After that, who knows? If these freaks are in charge then, I’d have to decide if I wanted to live on in their psychotic world or if I wanted to start blowing up churches and shooting church ladies (and men and children and whoever they would have managed to suck in). (I’m big into medieval thoroughness in that sort of situation.)

  4. The name “The Family” is already creepy. Add child rape? Sick. From what I read, they’re behind the scenes but very influential in the Conservative camps.

    • This was a post I did a couple of years ago, but it seemed apropo to the news about the House Science Committee membership.

And the Bronowski clip needs airing often, especially in times like these.

  5. Can I write your next blog post for you as a guest?

I’m thinking something along the lines of “Some cyclists are rude and run red lights while flipping the bird, therefore ALL cyclists are rude and run red lights while flipping the bird”.

Certainty of any political hue scares the living crap out of me.

    • And yet I’ve noticed a certain amount of certainty in some of your comments. 🙂

I tend to believe that outside of nonpartisan academics who study politics it is difficult to express political opinion without some degree of a sense of certainty: otherwise most people wouldn’t write anything, particularly in blogs. Not being an academic, and expressly using my blog to express my reactions, some visceral, some merely emotional, and infusing some approximation of thought into them, I write more from the certainty of ‘this is what I feel about such and so’. It’s cheaper than blood pressure medication.

Ideological certainty, as practiced by The Family and the Republican Tea Party, is something to fear and to attack, and the final line of your comment is right on point. I would say the same of the other side of the fence, but the RTP et al are so extreme, for this country, as to make any ideological certainty on the other side virtually invisible. (And given the current state of affairs here the RTP would, if they thought of it, call that a Liberal plot to make the RTP look bad.)

And no, no guest blogging. I’d just get annoyed most likely. See comment on blood pressure.

In any event, cyclists around here ride scared because there are so many tourists driving around not paying attention to anything smaller than a car. Flipping the bird at a car runs the risk of pissing off a right wing ideologue and getting yourself run over. Somewhat reminiscent of Alan Furst’s ‘Night Soldiers’, in the opening pages, but without the bicycle. It didn’t turn out well for the brash brother.
