More Quickies Again…

Bobby Gates forgot something…

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, speaking in Tokyo (that’s in Japan, not Iowa) called Asia one of “the last places on earth with the potential for a nuclear confrontation.”

The Lion, having had only a minimal amount of coffee so far, can’t figure out what he actually meant by that, but it would appear that little Bobby forgot that the United States slaughtered hundreds of thousands of civilians with two nuclear weapons in Japan back in 1945, making it the first place for a nuclear confrontation in the history of the world. Civilians in paper houses against nuclear weapons. Hell of a confrontation, eh?

Veterans screwed, Pentagon hides data…

In today’s Globe Bryan Bender writes that a respected physicians’ group estimates that healthcare for Iraq veterans will top 650 billion dollars. No big surprise there for anyone with three brain cells to rub together, which may explain why the Little Boy Emperor has no clue about it.

But how about this information, which the Pentagon has withheld and which was finally made public by Senator Ted Kennedy.

  • 11,000 veterans denied re-employment on their return
  • 22,000 lost seniority and pay
  • 20,000 pensions cut
  • 11,000 denied previous health insurance benefits

And that’s on top of yesterday’s report that one-quarter of homeless people are veterans.

That’s how Bush’s Republican administrative machine takes care of the people who went to Iraq and Afghanistan to do Bush’s dirty work.

The Lion doesn’t support what the troops did and are doing over there, but they deserve to be treated better than this for their service. In fact, it’s the law.

And we all know how much Bush and the Republicans respect the law, right?

Mukasey confirmed, Dems concur, nation betrayed…

The Senate voted 53-40 to confirm Michael Mukasey as Attorney General of the United States. Six Democrats joined the Republicans in putting into the top law enforcement position a man who is either incredibly stupid or has agreed to be used as a pawn to cover up and to further the crimes of the Bush administration.

We know he’s not stupid.

The Democrats who voted to inflict this pathetic and dangerous little man on the nation excused themselves by saying they didn’t think they could do better. They fear that the Boy Emperor will use a recess appointment to put in someone possibly more disgusting than Mukasey. And yet, not too long ago, Senator Harry Reid had said that he would call the Senate into session every ten days during a recess to prevent Little Georgie from making a recess appointment in another case.

So the Dems folded and once again betrayed the law and the Constitution and put the nation into the hands of an Attorney General who will prove to be worse than Gonzales, albeit in a different way.

The Lion would point out, once again, and fruitlessly, that the country didn’t elect the Democrats to play pat-a-cake with Bush and the Republican traitors in Congress. We sent them there to fight the bastards, to drag the country back into the twenty-first century, not the twelfth.

You have good reason for being Grumpy. I don’t think there is anything more to say about the Dems. Boy, I REALLY wanted to cut them slack in the beginning of the year, but it’s impossible to after all of this.

  2. They act like they’re so helpless, when all that is required is an act of will, not even courage really. It’s maddening.

I wonder how the Democrats will react if they’re actually given the keys to the kingdom, the trifecta of House, Senate and Executive. I’m not wildly optimistic, though it’s truly hard to see how they could do worse than the Republicans.

I hate this two party system, and the first past the post election system that enables it. It’s hard to work up any enthusiasm for the process when the choice is between the heartless and the spineless.

  3. Given a rational, committed, progressive government, it would still take years, possibly a couple of decades, at least, to undo the damage the Republicans have done to the United States.

Given that the Democrats are less than rational and certainly not progressive and have more than a few members who should be committed somewhere, I doubt that no matter what the case we will have anything good to look forward to for a long time. Other than, of course, the relative good that the Democrats are not Republicans.

I think that if I were younger and had no cats I would leave the States. In my gut I believe there is serious madness on the way. Actually I’m not sure there is any place in the world that will escape it. If the climate doesn’t get us, the sociopaths surely will.

Canada welcomes cats. I’ve looked into it myself. 🙂

Every age has these feelings. All I can say is that in my gut as well, it looks worse than it ever has for America – and, de facto, the world. Our lives are pretty short though, so maybe we’re just falling into the age-old ‘end of world’ feeling.

If ever there was a prophetic poem it was Yeats’ The Second Coming. Those people are here now and they are indeed the worst of us.
